Elf Races

Elf Races of Draeth

The elven races are ancient, the only surviving sentient beings from the Age of Legends. Their legends say they were born from light that the gods sent down to Draeth to create beautiful beings that would take care of the world the gods had created. The light of the sun touched the mountains and the deep valleys and created the sun elves, or High Elves. The light of the stars filtered down through the branches of the silent forests and glens and created the star elves, or Wood Elves. The light of the moon graced the top of the waves and the frozen tundra and created the moon elves, or Sea Elves. But, according to elvish legend, the darkness from beyond the stars saw the creation of beauty and were angry and jealous, and the darkness that touched the cracks in the earth and twisted, deep places of Draeth became the dark elves, or Drow.

Elves abide by ancient religious tenets passed down by elven elders for generations, called the “telavannierii”, which forbids the destruction of natural resources and mandates the protection of the world’s wild places and natural order. Some elves are more observant than others, and the most observant often make excellent rangers, druids, and woodsmen, but all elves observe the Pact to some degree. There is a word for those who desecrate the Pact: “Orc”.

Elven society is divided along these four cultures, plus the outcasts who are labeled Orcs. Elves live long lives and tend to spend them with each other, tucked away in their hidden cities and settlements. They do not have many children, so children are celebrated and pampered, and many are raised believing that great danger lies outside the boundaries of the enclave. They are gifted in magic and graceful, but arrogant and often naive. Their legends reach farther back into history than any other living race, and the most learned among them claim to still remember the Age of Legends, when they ruled the world.

Sun Elves (High Elves)

High elves live on mountain peaks and valleys inaccessible to those without their nimble feet and quick reflexes. They carve cities out of the rock, but unlike the dwarves (who some say they learned the craft from) they prefer to live and bask in the light of the sun, so their architecture is full of windows and elaborate stone lattice designed to let in the light and keep out the cold. They specialize in Abjuration, Divination, and Enchantment magic, allowing them to influence their environment and shape their mountain homes to their will.

The largest population of high elves in Draeth lives in a conglomerate of city-states scattered around the northern end of the Stonehome Mountains. They are a separate political entity from the Brenin Kingdoms, and often get into border and trade disputes with the humans living in “the lowlands”. They often trade goods and especially magic objects, being skilled enchanters (some of the best in the world), but usually do so in exchange for food and other supplies, rather than crafts or services, because their mountain homes are not suited for agriculture and they look down their noses at most of the artistic pursuits of non-Elves. They are not militaristic, but value their independence, and all elves are required to serve in the armed forces for 100 years, though they very rarely see any combat and spend most of their time off-duty. They have good relations with the small population of Wood Elves living in the moors and conifer forests to the south of the mountains.

High elves have bronze skin and hair that ranges from copper to black. They are tall and slender, and usually graceful. Their eyes are golden, silver, or black.
